Welcome to the Codec project, a new website linking four contemporary arts organisations: Artspace (http://www.artspace.co.nz), Galerie Dessford Vogel (http://www.gdv.org.nz), The Physics Room (http://www.physicsroom.org.nz), and Teststrip (Auckland).

Four artist projects were commissioned to launch this site, with a committment to intensively exploring the possibilites of the internet as a space to present new kinds of work to new audiences. You can access these projects via the images on the contents page - some require a minimum of Netscape 3 or Internet Explorer 3

This site also contains articles from the Codec publication, which - as well as functioning as a 'catalogue' - seeks to make more visible some of the cultural and internet activity taking place both within new Zealand and overseas. The publication contributors have very different relationships to the internet, spanning artistic, commercial, communitarian and academic fields. However, all of them are actively involved in its development as a medium - they're the people who make cyberspace a place where real things happen. If there's something which connects them all together, it's probably an identification with the well-worn truism that the internet isn't about computers or cable, but about people communicating and people doing things together.

See you there.
